Inertial navigation systems, or INS, is a navigation device that uses a device, motion sensors (accelerometers), and rotation sensors (gyroscopes) to continuously calculate the position, orientation, and velocity of a moving object without needing external references.

A GPS IMU, an IMU is an electronic device that measures and reports on a vehicle’s velocity, orientation, and gravitational forces, using a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes. IMUs are often used in conjunction with GPS, as they can provide accurate motion information even when GPS data is unavailable. It can also help detect spoofing and jamming scenarios. This data is available in a raw format to the user or can be calculated by the GNSS receiver in the system for real-time output to an external device.

NovAtel Inertial Navigation Systems (NovAtel SPAN®)
